• The Big Idea

For those of you who have wondered, “Why doctor approved thong underwear?”, read on:

Marie, who is the doctor half of the RX Undies team, typically wears thongs with dress pants and yoga pants. Marie had long searched for thong underwear that was highly breathable, made with organic fabric, and provided a smooth profile. She wanted it to be comfortable with both work and workout clothes; in short, she didn’t want to notice the underwear while wearing it. Since Marie couldn’t find any thong underwear that met all her criteria, she teamed up with Aileen, a female engineer and local fashionista to create RX Undies. Aileen combined her engineering expertise with her background in modeling and fashion, along with her sewing skills developed in middle school home economics (thank goodness Mrs. Valentine assigned the class such sewing projects as a sweatshirt and a tye-dyed fanny pack).

What better endorsement for RX Undies than to have a large group of female doctors and nurses test them out and give their feedback and approval? The ladies in our test group wore RX Undies to work while they saw patients, under their sleek evening clothes, and while they were at yoga or out running. Everyone who participated in the test group told us they would recommend them to their friends, family, and other medical professionals – in fact our entire test group gave RX Undies their approval and endorsement.

  • Thong Nomenclature

We found the Wikipedia entry on “thong” very informative:

The origin of the word thong in the English language is from Old English thwong, a flexible leather cord.

Many languages borrow the English word string to refer to this type of underwear, usually without the G. Another common name is tanga (or sometimes, string tanga), especially in the German Tanga. A frequent metaphor, especially in South America, is dental floss as in Spanish hilo dental or Portuguese fio dental (the Brazilian word for thong); in English, the term “Butt floss” is sometimes used. In Lithuanian it is “siaurikės” (“narrows”), Italian “perizoma” or “tanga”, in Turkish “ipli külot” (“stringed underpants”), and in Bulgarian as “prashka” (slingshot). In Israel the thong, mostly the G-string, is called Khutini (חוטיני), from the word Khut, which means String. Similarly, in Iran, it is called “Shortbandi” (شورت بندی) in which “short” (from English: Shorts) means “briefs” and “bandi” means “with a string”. A Puerto-Rican Spanish slang term, used by Reggaeton artists, is gistro. Australians often colloquially refer to the G-string as a g-banger or simply banger.

In some names for the thong, the bareness of the buttocks is noted, as in Spanish colaless (the origin is probably connected to the term topless but in reference to cola, colloquial term for butt in South American Spanish), and in other names the “T”-like shape of the back is highlighted. In the dialects of Chinese language, the T-back is commonly called dingziku (丁字褲/丁字裤) which literally means 丁 character pants (or roughly, T-letter pants). In Korean, it is called 티팬티 (T panty). However, there are several usages of the term T-back in English as well (e.g., Children’s literature author E. L. Konigsburg’s T-backs, T-shirts, Coat and Suit).

  • One Size Doesn’t Fit All

    06.26.2012 No Comments

A friend of ours told us a funny story about wearing a pair of one-size-fits-all thong underwear to work under a skirt. The underwear had never been a tight fit on her size 2 frame, and on one particular day she noticed that the underwear felt extra loose. The elastic had started to give out, and since the underwear had never been a great fit to begin with, she shuffled around her office all day hoping that her panties didn’t slide down to her ankles.

Most underwear is sized S/M/L. Have you ever held a small up next to a medium and a large? We have. Often, they are not that different in size. It just doesn’t make sense how those three sizes will fit everyone from a 2 to a 12 and fit them well.

We wanted RX Undies to be a great fit, no matter what size you are. That is why they range in size from 00-20 and correspond to pants/skits sizes. When your underwear fits your body well, it says put all day.

Do you need a size not represented in the RX Undies size range? Let us know; we love feedback and want to make sure we are providing RX Undies sized correspondingly to those interested in wearing them.

  • Dr. Recommended Health Tips

Since Marie (half of the RX Undies team) is a practicing physician, we thought we’d share her top six tips for maintaining feminine health.

    1) Try to avoid wearing underwear made with synthetic or non-breathable material over the gusset (crotch). The gusset should be made from natural/organic material and the main fabric of the underwear should be breathable; mesh fabric is ideal). This ensures that moisture won’t be trapped when you exercise, sweat, etc.

    2) Never wear pants that are too tight. Ladies, there needs to be a little breathing room and chaffing is never a good thing.

    3) Machine wash your underwear with warm/hot water. Hot water is the best for disinfecting. Hand-washed clothes often aren’t washed sufficiently or rinsed well, and soap residue can lead to irritation and infection.

    4) Don’t douche. Douching washes out normal flora giving other bacteria the chance to grow and disrupt the healthy balance. This can lead to unpleasant symptoms or infection. The vagina is a miraculous part of your body and can keep itself clean and balanced.

    5) Use sanitary products made from organic/unbleached cotton. You don’t need cotton grown with the use of pesticides or that has been chemically bleached up against your sensitive lady parts. Pads don’t allow for air flow and can trap moisture near the surface of the skin, so use them sparingly.

    6) Be careful with bikini-area hair removal. Marie recommends shaving with a sharp razor and a healthy shaving cream. Don’t use depilatory cream; you don’t need anything that is potent enough to dissolve hair entering your blood stream (eek). Marie routinely sees patients suffering from folliculitis from waxing (an infection in the hair follicle after the hair is ripped out, particularly from self-waxing). If you must wax, go to a professional and make sure the wax used doesn’t contain any harmful ingredients.

  • Doctor approved thong underwear?

    05.01.2012 No Comments

What is doctor approved thong underwear? We tested RX Undies on female doctors and nurses and asked for their feedback. We asked that each participant in our RX Undies test run wear a pair of RX Undies at least twice and report back to us regarding the experience. Our test group told us that they would recommend RX Undies to other medical professionals and to their friends and family, and gave RX Undies their endorsement/approval. Here is some of the feedback we received:

“On par with the highest quality thong underwear with the advantage of the different design, the larger size range, and a nicer liner!” – ObGyn

“I’m an ObGyn, so my day includes lots of walking, sitting, standing, and bending – I found RX Undies to be very comfortable.” – ObGyn

“I was really impressed by the softness [of RX Undies].” – ObGyn

“I really liked the design. Fit nicely on body but didn’t feel too tight. Hid well under clothes.” – ObGyn

“I would wear thongs more often given how comfy these were.” – ObGyn

“I hate panty lines but find traditional thongs uncomfortable. I loved these!” – MD

“I had an excellent overall experience with RX undies!! As I am entering into the nursing field, I know the importance of hygiene in that area. I rarely find underwear that fit properly and the design felt as though they were made especially for me.” – RN

“YES! I never thought I would be so enthusiastic about underwear, but RX undies are amazing!”- RN

  • The Inspiration

Since you asked, we thought we’d share the inspiration for the creation of RX Undies.

After medical school, Marie spent a month on a medical mission in rural parts Guatemala and Honduras. Her days consisted of treating local residents of all ages in a general practice setting. As the hot spring days progressed, Marie noted that she was treating a large number of women for yeast and other vaginal infections. Time and time again, she noted that the women suffering from these issues were wearing very tight-fitting nylon underwear. The underwear that these women were wearing didn’t fit properly (it was too small) and it didn’t allow for the passage of air; moisture trapped near the skin was the cause of the infections. This got Marie to thinking about underwear that would readily breathe, would wick away moisture, and could possibly even prevent the growth of bad bacteria…

Marie’s experience in Central America sparked a conversation between her and Aileen and they shared common experiences with ill-fitting thongs made of synthetic/non-breathable material. Together they started generating prototypes, and soon RX Undies were born.
