• The Healthy Deodorant

The number one hygiene/beauty product we recommend to to our friends and family (and anyone else who will listen) is The Healthy Deodorant from Lavanila Laboratories. As anyone who has tried to find an aluminum-free, harmful-chemical-free deodorant can attest to, finding a “natural” deodorant that works is like finding a flattering bathing suit post-holiday-binge. Thankfully, we have good news for you: your deodorant search is over!

Both of our mothers have had or have breast cancer and so both of us at RX Undies were highly motivated to make some changes to minimize our risk to toxins and carcinogens. First on the list was saying goodbye to antiperspirant. It was a difficult farewell, since as it turns out, antiperspirant works well. Really well. Really super well. So well in fact, that we were surprised to learn that without it, we sweat when we are nervous or anxious. Nuts. But considering that sweat excretes toxins from the body, maybe that wasn’t such a bad thing.

We rolled, sprayed and rubbed our way through nine or ten natural deodorants. We met the same result with each: we smelled. What was worse was that was that once we broke the seal (or perspired a little bit), there was no going back. Applying additional deodorant didn’t help with the existing underarm odor. There was nothing we could do but take a shower in the evening and try again with something else the following day.

But just when we had resigned ourselves to the notion that we’d probably smell funky any time the temperature climbed above eighty degrees, we tried Lavanila deodorant. This deodorant kept us smelling fresh for much longer, and when we finally did break the sweat seal, we found that a reapplication of the deodorant took care of existing odor. Hallelujah, our deodorant prayers had been answered!

  • Organic Bamboo Fabric

    03.19.2012 8 Comments

Since the RX Undies liner is made from organic bamboo, we thought we’d take some time to delve into the amazing properties of this wonderful material.

    Physical properties:
Organic bamboo fabric is lightweight and durable; it does not wear out easily (so you should feel free to machine-wash and dry your RX Undies). Bamboo fabric is also wrinkle resistant, which is great if you let your undies sit in the dryer for a while after the buzzer sounds (we are definitely guilty of that). Bamboo is great for people with sensitive skin or who are allergic to other fabrics (like hemp or wool, though neither of those would make a great liner for panties). Bamboo fabric does make a great lining material because it is super soft; it’s cashmere-like in texture. Organic bamboo fabric keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, so it is great year round, no matter the climate in which you reside.

    Hygienic properties:
Organic bamboo fabric has some great attributes that promote the health of your lady parts. Bamboo is naturally anti-microbial. We discovered evidence that bamboo socks can help relieve the symptoms of athlete’s foot. Karen Biers, Utah State University Extension Clothing and Textiles Specialist shares findings from a study where, “Fifty individuals suffering from athlete’s foot were asked to wear socks made from the anti-bacterial bamboo. All individuals reported that the burning and itching associated with the condition disappeared within one to two days after the test began. Within two to six days, the blistering and sores characteristic of the condition disappeared and the skin returned to normal.” In additional to this anti-microbial property, bamboo fabric wicks moisture away from the skin keeping you comfortable and dry. Bamboo fabric is porous, so it breathes well and allows for the passage of air to the surface of your skin. Given that bamboo fabric wicks away moisture and is porous, it should be no surprise that it is also odor-resistant.

If you are now thinking that there is no way that organic bamboo fabric could be any more amazing than it is, guess what? It’s sustainable and eco-friendly! Bamboo grows naturally (it does not need to be planted and tended like cotton) and does not need fertilizers and pesticides, or any watering other than what falls from the sky. After it is harvested, bamboo sends up new shoots and does not need to be replanted. While it grows, bamboo takes in greenhouse gases and in turn releases oxygen into the environment. Yay, cleaner air!

  • Household Hazards

It was important to us when designing RX Undies that we include as much organic fabric as possible, which is why the liner is made from organic bamboo (and extends up much higher than traditional thongs). We at RX Undies feel strongly about natural/non-toxic beauty, hygiene, and household products. National Public Radio recently featured a really interesting broadcast about just this topic; we’ve included a link below so you can listen for yourself.

  • The RX Undies Photo Shoot

The RX Undies photo shoot took place at an advertising agency in downtown Boston. Call time was 10am on a humid Saturday. Highlights from the day included the RX Undies team spending a fair amount of time getting up close and personal with the models while making small positioning adjustments to the RX Undies they were modeling. The shoot was complete by mid-afternoon, and by that time our photographer had thousands of megabytes of pictures of beautiful ladies in thong underwear.

The models: Since RX Undies are sized corresponding to pants sizes 00-20, we wanted a diverse group of models. We were thrilled with how the ladies looked when lined up together; from left to right: Shanae, Anneline, Roberta, Kendra, and Lauralee.

We were also lucky to have fitness competitor Melissa model for us. She brought her own weights to the shoot (two 15 pound dumbbells), and carried them from where she parked (about 6 blocks away). Strong lady!

The photographer: We were super excited to work with Conor Doherty (http://www.conordohertyphoto.com/). His work is regularly featured in The Improper Bostonian, Stuff Magazine, and Boston Weddings Magazine. Below is a self-portrait of Conor:

Hair and makeup: We had two talented hair and makeup artists on set with us, Kris Clark and Erica Iris. Here is an action shot of Erica:

Here are a few behind-the-scenes images from the shoot:

A big thank you to all who participated in the first RX Undies photo shoot!
